A peacekeeper, a river, and a promise to his kids

The album opens with "Forgotten Peacekeeper," a track Mark describes as being about someone trying to keep the peace in every situation, "because there's enough violence in the world." It's the kind of quiet mission statement that sets the tone for a record built more on reflection than spectacle.

"Flow Like the River" takes a gentler approach to the same idea — staying calm through life's ups and downs, adjusting to your surroundings the way water adjusts to a riverbed. And "Now It's Our Time" turns the lens toward his own life directly: raising kids, watching them grow, and reaching the point where parents finally get to do the things they put off while their kids were young.

“The 'we' represents the parents — when the kids are grown, the time comes when the parents do all the things they planned to do after their kids are out on their own.”

Detailed direction, or letting it run free

Asked how involved he was in shaping the sound, Mark describes a process that shifts depending on the song: "I go back and forth using detailed descriptions and letting RockAgent run freely with my lyrics." Some tracks needed precise instruction. Others he let breathe on their own. Hearing the first one fully produced, he says, "gave me a big sense of accomplishment."

"Completely yours"

Mark's answer to the skeptics is one of the more direct ones RockAgent artists have given: it's not about who performs the notes. It's about who put the heart into the words. If the emotion is genuine, the ownership follows.

"Starting Out" is exactly that for Mark — a start, not a finish line. He's already looking ahead to everything else he's written over the years that hasn't found its way to a recording yet.
